When FarSuite says "No Router Found"
FarSuite automatically configures your router so your Mac is accessible from the internet. But, it can't find a router to configure.
Was FarSuite working before?
If FarSuite was working correctly before and your network setup hasn't changed, you should:
- Restart your router, then restart your Mac.
- If that doesn't solve the problem, contact support.
Check UPnP
UPnP is what lets FarSuite and other applications configure your router. Most modern routers have this feature, however sometimes it's turned off by default. The first thing you should do is:
- Look in your router's settings for the UPnP option, and switch it on if it's off. You might need to restart your router for this to take effect.
- If you make this change, click FarSuite's Restart button to see if your change has worked.
- If you need help with this, you can download your router's user manual from the manufacturer's web site, then search the manual for "UPnP".
- If you can't find this setting, your router must not have this feature - proceed with the instructions below.
- If you make the change but still get the same error, proceed with the instructions below.
Setting up your router
FarFinder has tried to change your router settings automatically, but hasn't been able to. Often, you can make the required changes yourself.
Not for everyone
These instructions involve changing your Mac's network settings and also changing the settings on your router. If this all sounds a bit much, fair enough - this sort of thing isn't everybody's cup of tea. Other options are shown below.
Having said that, no special skills are required, aside from taking your time and working through the instructions, which are quite long.
It's your network
These instructions are here to help you, but do take ownership of your network and the changes you're making. Be sure to note down the settings you're changing so you can change them back if you need to.
Other options
-
You can preview the next major version of FarSuite - it has a new option for people on difficult networks.
Think of it as a "just make it work" button; it uses an additional service to make FarSuite work for people
whose networks can't be configured by usual means.
This service is free for now, but will attract a small subscription charge when it is officially released. You can download this preview (beta) version from the downloads page. - If you're feeling rich, you could buy a different router; Apple's Airport Base Station and Airport Express are good choices. We've also had good experiences with Linksys routers. (But if you have a combined router and modem, your options will be different.)
What's Wrong?
For FarSuite to work, you have to be able to connect from the internet to your
Mac. Your router is acting as a firewall, stopping connections from
getting to your Mac. We need to let connections to FarSuite get through.
(This is not a security risk, but if you're worried, you can read
about FarSuite's security.
Normally, FarSuite would be able to do this for you automatically. Unfortunately though, your
router doesn't allow this. Please note that this is because your router is missing a feature;
it is not a problem with FarSuite.
